This week marks Geography Awareness Week around the globe. Geography is a growing discipline at Oxford International College. It is the subject of our time, helping us understand and deal with some of humanities' greatest challenges, from climate change, to understanding population growth, through to the changing geopolitical shifts taking place all around us. Geography opens students' minds up to the wider world, being classified as a preferred facilitating subject by the UK's prestigious Russell Group, which enables students to understand our place on the planet: the physical and scientific processes which enable life to flourish and how we, as humans, live and interact with these processes.
Our AS Students at Oxford International College had the unique opportunity last week (11th November) to visit Amersham Field Studies Centre and undertake research into hydrological processes operating at the River Misbourne. Students carried out hydroslope, interception, infiltration and flooding studies in the local area. A great day was had by all, with the weather holding out! Opportunities to use specialist equipment and learn fieldwork techniques in Geography was beneficial in giving students the ability to see how what they've learnt in the classroom translates into real life and study the water cycle in more depth.
