I’ve been at The British College of Brazil since 2013, and I’ve always found students at our school to be friendly, polite, and motivated learners. Mr. Paul McDaniel, Head of Primary School

Qualifications:

  • BA, English Language and Sociology
  • PGCE, Primary Education
  • Over 16 years of experience in education

For my undergraduate degree, I studied English Language and Sociology at The University of Sheffield. After graduating, I returned to London and completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Middlesex University. I was fortunate enough to secure a position teaching Year 4 at an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ school in North London before the end of my course, and I went on to spend six years working across Key Stage 2 and coordinating PE, G&T, and ICT.

At the time of my decision to move to Brazil, I was working in Year 6, so I was surprised but excited to accept a position teaching in Year 2. It was a whole new experience for me and has, without a doubt, enriched my practice. I enjoyed working with the Key Stage 1 pupils so much that I completed a further four years leading Year 1 and Year 2 as Key Stage 1 Coordinator, before moving back into Year 6 at the start of the 2018–19 school year. I’m now working on developing the approach to assessment across the whole of the Primary School, alongside my new responsibility as Deputy Head.

I was born and raised in London, which is where I spent the first 18 years of my life before moving up to Sheffield for university. I returned home for a few years before the call of the big wide world encouraged me to take the plunge and apply to The British College of Brazil. As an avid football fan, I spend a lot of time (probably too much time, if I am being honest!) playing, watching, and reading about football. I recently extended this interest to include writing, as I am currently producing reports for a blog that covers the Brasileirao, the Brazilian first division.

I have also tried my hand at a variety of other sports, such as golf and squash, with varying degrees of success! I enjoy reading about a range of topics including history, technology, and current affairs, and I try my best to keep up with current events.

Mr. Timothy Jones

Mr. Timothy Jones, Deputy Head of Secondary School

Qualifications:

  • BA (Honours), History
  • MA, East Asian Rural Development
  • PGCE, History
  • MA Ed, International Education (in progress)

The British College of Brazil is a small, tight-knit community. We have the luxury of knowing all the students in Secondary. As a teacher, this has been an incredible opportunity for me to teach according to students’ needs and interests – creating a curriculum that’s inclusive, stimulating, and challenging.

After completing A-Levels in History, Politics, English Language, and Media Studies in my local Secondary school in Worcestershire, England, I moved to work as an English teacher in a university in Vietnam, and later, at a dairy farm in Australia. This move had a profound influence on my life and aspirations.

Returning to the UK, I began studying a degree in history, focusing on modern political and economic history, mostly specialising in the British Empire and the Soviet Union. Whilst studying my undergraduate degree, I also began studying film theory. For my dissertation, I used depictions of The Great War in film as a lens through which to study political developments in the Soviet Union.

After graduating in History, I moved to study a course in Development Studies for a master’s degree, with the view to work in the field in Southeast Asia. My specialisms were Southeast Asian development with the Thai language and agricultural development. I worked with a group of grassroots NGOs in Thailand to conduct research into the impacts of hydroelectric dam construction on the Mekong River on the livelihoods of riparian communities.

Having sated my interest in field work, I returned to the UK to work for NGOs. I found myself doing school engagement work and quickly fell in love with being in the classroom. I managed to secure a position on the Teach First training scheme and studied a History PGCE through UCL’s Institute of Education. My passion for pedagogy and education was ignited, and I worked as Head of History in schools in London’s East End. I’m currently the Head of Humanities at BCB.

I love to learn, and this has led me to postgraduate education. I’m currently studying my second master’s degree. I read nonfiction almost exclusively. My areas of interest are currently the development of civilizations; sustainable economic development and zero growth economies; the conquest and liberation of South America; intercultural education; and post-colonial theory.

I’m also passionate about music. I’ve worked with students in Secondary school on a rock band project, which has given me the chance to relive my youth. I’ve spent as much time as I can listening to music and going to concerts. I also really enjoy cooking and gardening; I only like to grow things that can be eaten, and I am increasingly interested in the medicinal and nutritional values of plants. I’m also fascinated by film and its value as cultural artefact. I especially like Japanese cinema of the sixties and what’s considered Slow Cinema. I lead the International Award at BCB, because I love hiking, and this has been a great opportunity for me to get out into the wilderness. I’ve recently learned to brew beer and make ceramics – two new skills I hope to develop further in the coming years.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Social Communication, Publicity and Advertisement
  • MBA in Digital Marketing
  • Over 11 years of experience working in education

When I started at BCB, back in 2012, it was a very small school with less than 40 students. I had the pleasure of being part of its community, values, and missions from the very beginning and watched it grow into what we are now. By knowing BCB’s heritage, history, and values, I feel confident to say that this is the only truly international school in São Paulo, and I’m excited to be leading the Marketing, Admissions and Communications team into a new era with the announcement of a brand new, state-of-the-art campus. The new campus will maintain its essence and sense of warmth through a child-centred, personalised approach to education, with a global set of collaborations that only a NAE school can provide.

I have two daughters, also part of BCB community, currently attending the first year of the IGCSE and the IBDP. I can honestly say that they’re being provided with the tools and skills they need to succeed on whatever path they choose to take.

THE QUALITY OF OUR TEACHERS

What sets our teachers apart? The majority hold international qualifications from highly regarded institutions – mostly from the UK – which means they're fluently trained and experienced in using ‘differentiation’ in the classroom that allows each child to grow at their own pace.

They’re experts at tailoring to the needs, goals, and learning styles of each unique child, incentivising them to unlock their love for learning. With this tailor-made approach, 91% of our parents confirm their child receives a high-quality education from our school, citing our teachers who lead the way to greater academic success for our students.

Being part of Nord Anglia Education also gives our teachers great advantages, including exclusive access to exceptional qualifications and trainings.

They can enhance their expertise with:
  • An exclusive Executive Master’s in International Education from King’s College London
  • Numerous world-leading trainings from Nord Anglia University
  • Specialist training from Juilliard and MIT

OUR TEACHING AND LEARNING STANDARDS

At The British College of Brazil, we strengthen our teachers with an effective leadership structure at all levels of our school. While smaller teams lead their areas of expertise, our senior leaders support them to uphold the highest standards of teaching and learning, across every aspect.

We’re proud to meet the best educational standards in the world. We use word-renowned international curricula like the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and also count on Nord Anglia Education’s Oxford team of expert leaders, who oversee our academics and make recommendations on enhancements.

With double certification between our international academics and Brazilian National Education guidelines, we’re can also be proud to be fully accredited locally, by our Ministry of Education in Brazil.
ENHANCEMENTS FROM TECHNOLOGY

STEAM TEACHING WITH OUTSTANDING TECH

BCB teachers have the latest technologies in global education. This increases the level of personalisation for our students and enhances our teachers' instruction, from using data and analytics to building projects with slick tools and equipment.

Our favourite space on campus that embodies our approach to technology is our multi-purpose STEAM lab and maker space. Modelled after a similar space at MIT, our inspiring 'Maker Lab' encourages students to connect ideas and solve problems across STEAM subjects, as they take a hands-on approach to creating solutions. Our students go on to think beyond their limits and apply their creativity and curiosity in novel ways, guided by our teachers and strengthened by our first-rate technology.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU!

Our Admissions team would love to hear from you! Schedule a tour of our campus or a virtual discovery meeting to learn more about our programme and what makes us a special place for your child’s success.
