OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Primary School at The British College of Brazil covers the English National Curriculum’s Key Stages 1 and 2. From our home base in São Paulo, Brazil, our teachers guide and shape stimulating activities that build up each student’s confidence and encourage them to harness their natural curiosity. Our young learners achieve high levels of knowledge, skills, and understanding, while enjoying the learning process.

Personalised Learning and Attention in Primary School

At The British College of Brazil, Assistant Teachers work alongside class teachers in every year group in Primary School. This allows every student to have more personal attention and for teachers to closely monitor their progress.

In general, Primary children work mainly with their class teacher, although our specialist teachers teach certain subjects, such as Music and Physical Education. All teaching staff speak English as their first language and have appropriate teaching qualifications and experience in delivering the English National Curriculum.

A TYPICAL DAY AT THE BRITISH COLLEGE OF BRAZIL

What’s it feel like in our day-to-day at BCB? Our Primary days are filled with fascinating activities around the topics we’re discussing, as we explore many new facts and collaborate with our peers.
EXPLORE OUR DAILY SCHEDULE
MORNING WELCOME
Our energetic school leaders greet us as we enter school, catch up with our friends, and share information across families. We might tell our teachers more about what’s happening at home, or we might pass a football and play some music before heading to our first class.

GETTING READY
MUSICAL TUNES
We discover the world through curricula that take us on adventures about many different topics – and we build several kinds of skills, as a result. In music class, for example, we learn harmony and tempo with different tunes, and assemble to play for our parents and the extended community.
LEARNING AND PERFORMING
LUNCHTIME AND PLAY
We come together at midday to eat our nutritious lunches while discussing our thoughts and swapping stories with our teachers, TAs, or peers. In between lots of laughs, we may then shift to an active recess that can include life-size chess, football, basketball, or jump rope.
CONNECTING WITH PEERS
TELLING STORIES
We get engrossed in a book of our choice every day, and we practice using our own words – from summarising what we’ve read to inventing our own imaginative story. We can enrich our expression through Spanish or Portuguese lessons and arts and crafts activities, too.
NURTURING LITERACY
SPORTS TOURNAMENTS
During different sports and athletics, we strengthen our physical skills and nurture our well-being by boosting our resilience and collaborating with teammates on our common goals. During tournaments with competitors, we’ll show our sportsmanship while striving for our best.
GETTING ACTIVE
AFTER-SCHOOL FUN
After school, the learning doesn’t end! During extracurricular activities, we can continue to explore different things, and see what we do or don’t like. We might discover talents in rock band, hand-sewing, arts, reading, or sports – to name just a few favourites.
EXPLORING NEW INTERESTS

KEY STAGE 1

At Key Stage 1 of the English National Curriculum, our aim is for our young students to enjoy their time at school and to build the knowledge, understanding, and values to reach their full potential in all academic and social areas of school life. We focus on English and Mathematics, daily. We teach Science, Geography, History, Art and Design through a themed “topic” that enhances students’ learning. Music, Physical Education, PSHE, Portuguese, and Computing are also essential aspects of the curriculum.

In Language and Literacy lessons, we provide a rich and stimulating environment for children to find interest and pleasure in communicating in English. We give them many experiences to build their interest in reading with fluency, accuracy, understanding, and enjoyment.

In Mathematics and Science lessons, we help students build their knowledge and understanding of these subjects in everyday life. We encourage students to relate their work to other areas of the curriculum.

KEY STAGE 2

At Key Stage 2 of the English National Curriculum, we help students build their inquiry skills, using active investigative methods that make learning purposeful in the world. We encourage each child’s independence, while ensuring that they meet the main requirements of the English National Curriculum.

In line with UK expectations, students complete end-of-year assessments that identify progress and achievement very clearly in the ‘Core’ areas of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. The curriculum also incorporates Science, Geography, History, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education, PSHE, Portuguese (and additional opportunities to learn languages), as well as Computing.
