This week I had the pleasure of watching our Secondary pupils sailing at The Santo Amaro Yacht Club (YCSA) during their P.E lessons. Whilst watching from the dry shoreline I saw our pupils thoroughly enjoying the experience under the watchful eye of trained YCSA instructors.
There are numerous benefits of sailing and I have ranked the top ten*:
Mental wellbeing is hugely important when it comes to exercise. Most people associate exercise with having physical benefits but by being out on the water it can put you in a good mental space owing to the calmness of the water but also the wind.
Improves communication skills which are required in a team to effectively control a boat with the crew acting as a team. Effective communication both verbal and non - verbal is required as everyone plays a crucial role in order to keep the boat from capsizing.
Organizational skills are required to keep a boat ship shape with rope and pulleys everywhere it makes for a dynamic experience and the crew must be organised in where they sit and how they balance out the boat. If one of the crew makes a move then the rest of the team have to compensate.
…….and the rest
Spatial awareness
Increase agility
Muscle strength
Muscle endurance
Cardiovascular fitness
Lowers stress levels
Improves concentration
