Year 9 artists have been looking at the cultural movement of surrealism. Here are some fine examples of their creative response to their assignment: to make a surreal self portrait.

It was only a homework assignment, but Year 9 artists have excelled themselves with surreal interpretations of their own portraits. Surrealism was born in the 1920’s and artists, such as Rene Magritte, Dorothea Tanning and Salvador Dali, played with the notion that our subconscious mind was a fantastic source of creativity. In their art they transformed the world around us, by combining or distorting everyday scenes and objects. Year 9 artists searched their creative resources to come up with these truly remarkable images. They have asked themselves how best their characters or feelings can be represented and whether or not this representation needs to include a face. We are truly looking forward to seeing how these ideas can now be extended in class. Here is a small selection of work by Wen Wen, Pang-Mon, Aarav and Pear.
