This week, Book Week returns to the High School with a whole host of activities for students and staff!

Art, English, Languages, the Library and Tutors have all been involved in planning these events and we are excited to spend the week celebrating reading and all the joy it brings.

HS Book Week

Already today, some Year 7-9 English and Languages students have visited Primary for paired-reading time with books in a range of different languages. The students had a fantastic time and it was great for the teachers to see how the joy of reading brought the students together.

There are many more events happening throughout the week and here is just a snapshot:

  • Winners of the Get Caught Reading competition will be announced in Registration each morning, with their winning entries shared

  • Tutors and their Tutor Groups will spend time in Registration this week discussing their favourite books and reading extracts to one another

  • On Wednesday, our Year 5 and 6 students will visit High School for two very exciting events: a Mr Men & Little Miss English lesson, led by Ms. Elle and a group of Year 7 students, and the final of our Poetry by Heart competition which will take place in the Sports Hall

  • Throughout the week, students can take part in a Literary Treasure Hunt Competition where they will use clues to identify books that are in our curriculum or available in the Library

  • Mr. James, the Librarian, and the Languages and Art teams have been running a Bookmark Design Competition. The winning entries will be used to design and print our very own STA bookmarks that will be available for students to take home from the Library

  • In English, the winners of the Bilingual Books Project that students were working on before the half-term will be announced

  • In Languages, Year 9 students will be working on creating their own comic strips in their target language

  • Later in the week, students will have the opportunity to hear award-winning author Karen Osman discuss her personal journey and answering some questions that our students have submitted

  • Throughout the week, students will log their reading minutes and the Reading Champions will receive House Points

  • Finally, on Friday, all students and staff will dress up for Book Character Day and there will be a special edition of our Weekly Quiz

We look forward to sharing our reflections and photos from all of these events with you in next week’s Newsletter…
