AGES 2–4

OUR EARLY YEARS CURRICULUM

The British College of Brazil combines modern and innovative child-friendly education with traditional values and high standards from our home base in São Paulo, Brazil. At our international school, we follow the English National Curriculum through preschool and kindergarten, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage. At every stage of growth and exploration, we nurture an environment that fosters understanding, critical thinking, and enthusiasm throughout all activities of our world-class curriculum.

TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE EARLY YEARS

Teaching and learning at our school are based on three principles:

  • Stimulating curiosity and nurturing an interest in learning
  • Thinking critically and taking a structured approach to understanding and solving problems
  • Having an open mind and respect for other people and new ideas

EARLY YEARS LESSON

Our teachers weave our guiding principles throughout lessons, taking an interactive and thought-provoking approach that includes a wide variety of teaching styles. Our teachers plan lessons to suit a range of abilities so that every student can benefit from and improve upon their skills and knowledge. We encourage each child to actively participate.

Assistant Teachers also work alongside teachers in every year group in Early Years and Primary School, giving more attention to each student and closely checking their work.

We create a learning environment where children feel at home and become excited to explore new concepts and ideas. We encourage self-discipline, a sense of responsibility, and respect for others. Our classroom walls have many displays of the children’s arts and crafts, as well as language-based information that encourage their literacy skills. Our displays of learning material and continually changing role-play area further stimulate our students’ enthusiasm.

All lessons help our young students build their communication, language, and literacy skills, as they build their confidence in independently speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Initially, we put particular emphasis on speaking and listening and in pre-reading and pre-writing activities.

GETTING READY
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Our activities are always linked to themes, as we begin to explore our huge world. Our teachers will even take us outside or show us a new place, where we might get to munch on snacks or jump into swimming lessons with friends.
EXPLORING THE WORLD
TALKING AND LISTENING
We come together at midday to eat our nutritious lunches while having meaningful conversations with our teachers, TAs, and peers. We listen to different stories, use our vocabulary, and have lots of laughs that make our bonds stronger.
LUNCHTIME CONVERSATION
CONNECTING WITH OUR BODIES
Just like a battery-recharge, nap time allows us to connect with our bodies after refuelling, as we relax in our comfortable classroom. Our teachers and Tas know how to make the lighting and breezy airflow just right for a snooze.
RELAXING AND RECHARGING
STORYTELLING
We practice our listening and speaking skills when it comes time for stories! We get immersed in books and movies, and we also get excited to start reading and writing soon, too. Sometimes, we even get to sing and dance.
BUILDING LITERACY
STAY AND PLAY
After school, we continue to grow our curiosity, imagination, and creativity. During ‘Stay and Play’, we’ll jump into fun activities like Lego building, puppet shows, art making, or Juilliard dance lessons.
EXPLORING NEW THINGS

OUR EARLY YEARS CURRICULUM

In mathematics lessons, we introduce the children to important aspects of mathematical understanding and the foundation for numeracy. Our young learners participate in practical activities, using and understanding simple mathematical language.

Children acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of their environment, other people, and features of the natural and man-made world. Their personal and social development focuses learning how to work, play, cooperate with others, and function in a group beyond the family.

Our physical development programme helps children develop physical control, mobility, awareness of space, and manipulative skills in indoor and outdoor environments. We encourage the children to establish positive attitudes towards a healthy and active way of life. We also give the students many opportunities to be expressive and creative through art, craft, role-play, and music.
