Earlier in the day I had an amazing conversation with 8B in PSHE and the energy was reflected in the turnout of the year 8 parents who interacted with some very reflective takeaway points and also some inquisitive question.
We began speaking about the ethos behind the Nord Anglia mantra `be ambitious` which once explained is a very powerful and positive statement for us as a learning community. If we embrace the growth mindset, students, parents and teachers together can create an environment that is not afraid to take healthy risks, reflect on the results whilst always keeping an open mind. These three attributes are key to the IB Learner Profile (ibo.org) which drives our thinking about learning at The British College of Brazil (BCB).
Nord Anglia Education ́s (NAE) number 1 priority is a safe environment for all of us and this is no different at BCB. This is the foundation for success and I emphasised how lucky I felt to be joining a school that had just posted their first ever IGCSE results which were excellent and significantly above the UK average and in line with NAE. Building upon this foundation with our year 12 ́s we can aspire for great things allowing our pupils to access top 100 universities around the world through the IB Diploma program.
A great part of the information evening was the discussion on how we can make the IGCSE and IBDP align and Duncan Rose, our Principal, spoke about backward design of the curriculum of our school which from the IBDP, down to IGCSE (key stage 4), through key stage 3 and into the Primary Curriculum as a school we plan to instill the IB learner profile. We also plan to implement the third dimension of IB education which is conceptual understanding which can complement the two dimensional English National curriculum and build on the strong foundations of Knowledge and Skills which makes for a successful 21st century learner.
We also spoke about having a safe place for students to be but also a happy place and our pastoral team led by Ms Davis with Ms Calvo, Ms Mendes, Mr Davis and Ms Mayhew spoke about the importance of supporting pupils through open communication between home and school. If students, teachers and parents work together we can support our pupils to be resilient, reflective, mindful and ultimately confident so on the way to creating happy and successful BCB pupils!
Thanks to the parents who came and here is the presentation for anyone who was unable to make it.
