This term in Secondary we are taking a closer look at relationships and conflict management which is the core to our PSHE program across the whole school. I spoke about the importance of one of the 10 IB Learner Profile attributes ́Caring ́ which is key in any relationship and mentioned that empathy is a key element of this. In October I blogged about the BCB culture and how it was defined by empathy which I felt as soon as I arrived at the campus. Some of the words I used in that blog were warm, understanding and supportive. I also blogged about caring by definition being the display of concern for others which demonstrates a deep sense of understanding and a connection.

During PSHE this term we are going to be essentially learning about how to be empathetic at BCB. The ability to understand someone else or their position or perspective draws on some of the other IB Learner Profile attributes too such as communicator and a huge part of communication is the ability to listen. In any relationship, listening is crucial in order to build up a deep understanding of the context the other person is in and then respond to build a connection through dialogue. The assembly also spoke about the importance of being reflective and to be able to take a step back to look at the whole situation which is crucial in trying to resolve conflicts between people.

I have no doubt that our Pastoral team will lead our pupils on a journey of self discovery but crucially of the other in order to work towards the school vision which is for our pupils to make a positive difference to global society and that starts with our BCB community.
