OUR MUSIC CURRICULUM WITH THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL

Our music curriculum, enhanced by Juilliard, promotes cultural literacy and key skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. Through the Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme, our music curriculum includes a repertoire of great works of art, hand-selected by Juilliard. We also teach keyboard skills, which acts as an entry point for learning music theory.

Through our music curriculum designed by The Juilliard School, every student can enjoy being an engaged listener, composer, interpreter, and communicator.

Keyboard Skills

The keyboard acts as an entry point for learning music theory. We use it as a tool to teach basic skills such as reading, music notation, and harmony. The best way for students to understand musical concepts is from first-hand experience with the keyboard. From the age of five, every student will use the keyboard to explore the fundamentals of music and notation.

“Keyboards provide an immediate and satisfying way for students of all ages to develop a deeper musical understanding of all aspects of a musical score – harmony, melody, counterpoint, and rhythm. Keyboard skills open the door to rapid musical progress.”
– Aaron Wunsch, The Juilliard School

The Core Works

Nord Anglia students are exposed to a musical repertoire of great works of art hand-selected by Juilliard, which centres on 12 categories from different genres, cultures, and historical periods. Each category has a corresponding, iconic core work such as 'Ambush from Ten Sides', a traditional Chinese pipa solo, or Beethoven’s 'Fifth Symphony' and extension works for further exploration. Your child will study these works throughout their school career, utilising each piece to set the scene for their learning and engage deeply with the music.

The works have been carefully chosen based on their iconic quality, teachable moments, and breadth in your child's musical learning. Your child will study these works throughout their school career to give them deep engagement with and appreciation of each piece.

Interactive activities encourage students to engage with the works and key concepts while developing connections between the pieces, as well as other subjects.
