Year 9 artists from St Andrews International School Bangkok visited the Ancient City to draw and photograph interesting scenery.
On Wednesday 17 October Year 9 art students visited the Ancient City, known as Muang Boran, in Samut Prakan. The purpose of the trip was to collect visual information for their current thematic unit ‘Mindscape’ during which they investigate the Surrealist art movement. Students drew and photographed a variety of architectural and natural sights, including the Kuan Yin dragon statue and fountains. They also recorded observations at the temple of the Footprint of the Lord Buddha, a version of the temple in Saraburi. The students will go on to use their visual research to inform strange, dream-like images that they will create over the course of the term. In total we took over 160 students and without exception their attitude and application to the tasks was exemplary.
This week our ‘Artist of the Week’ award goes to Nan in Year 13, whose self-portrait suggests an inner narrative, created with personal and interesting use of symbolism. In the painting Nan depicts a classic head and shoulders composition, but discreetly swaps the body for mountains covered by a blanket of tree foliage. This is one of her studio pieces that will form her IB Visual Arts exhibition in March 2019.
This topic resonates deeply with our school's values and mission. It brilliantly highlights the significance of creating an inclusive and ambitious learning environment, where every student can thrive. The emphasis on fostering a sense of community, while cultivating innovation and authenticity, is exactly our ethos here at St Andrews.
Congratulations to Angelina, Melodie, Riddhi and Seymur, who achieved the best marks in Thailand in their IGCSE courses at St Andrews International School Bangkok!
